Galle is a major city in Sri Lanka, situated on the southwestern tip of Sri Lanka, 128 km from Colombo. Galle is the capital and the largest city of Southern Province, Sri Lanka and it lies in Galle District.

Founded in the 16th century by the Portuguese, Galle reached the height of its development in the 18th century, before the arrival of the British. It is the best example of a fortified city built by Europeans in South and South-East Asia, showing the interaction between European architectural styles and South Asian traditions.

This is famous as one of the world heritages which give the grandeur to the southern province in Sri Lanka. This dutch fort is surrounded by the sea in 3 sides and there is a museum of marine fish, Archeological museum of marine fish, the ancient Dutch fort, the Stadium, School, Courts, Police Station and Army fortress 2 many other ancient and educationally valuable places There is a Light House situated near this fortress.

Galle is easily reached as a day trip from Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna. But an increasing number of travellers are staying within the atmospheric walls of the Fort, instead choosing to make day trips to the beach towns.
